What is Buti Yoga?

Have you ever been in a yoga class where there’s music playing and suddenly the beat drops, but you are trapped in a pose? If you’re anything like me, you cannot stay still whenever there is music playing. I always have to wiggle and sing along. That’s where Buti Yoga comes into play and what made me fall in love with the practice.

Buti Yoga is a blend of power yoga, cardio-intensive tribal dance, conditioning, and deep abdominal toning. This workout tones and sculpts the entire body while facilitating complete inner transformation. Buti Yoga utilizes the Spiral Structure Technique® to sculpt and tone the deep abdominal muscles that stabilize and strengthen the body. We’re all about sweating out negative energy and reaching deep inside to release our inner primal goddess! This practice is done to fast-paced, up-beat music, flowing from yoga asana into tribal dance into cardio and plyometrics. Our song choices are intentional to create cardio sprints that allow students to seamlessly move throughout what mimics a HIIT workout without even knowing it! We tune into our bodies and awaken the chakras, letting the energies take over.

“Is it BOOTY? Like having to do with your butt?” Buti (boo-tee) is an Indian Marathi word that means “a cure that’s been hidden or kept secret”. Buti is a practice of going within to discover your power and potential. It becomes the cure to any feelings of fear, weakness, or not being good enough. Today, with social media, we are often looking for external validation to heal ourselves. We believe the one and only true cure comes from within. The practice of Buti Yoga helps strip away the layers that hide this cure and bring about total transformation.

Buti Yoga was founded in 2010 by Bizzie Gold. The method is currently taught in more than 20 countries and more than half of the United States. Today there are more than 2,000 certified instructors! Check out butiyoga.com to see upcoming certifications! One of my favorite parts of Buti Yoga is that you never know what’s coming, as an instructor or a student. When I am planning for a class, I don’t plan out each posture and in what order. I make a playlist of songs and I have a toolbox of postures and movements I can teach in each posture, but I choose those poses and movements based on the music. In Buti Yoga, music is like a GPS that is guiding us through class. For example, you might think you’re getting some rest time in child’s pose, but next thing you know the beat picks up and your instructor might call out child pose push-ups! Or my favorite- having the students rocking back and forth, hugging their knees into their chest, and then surprising them by calling out reverse burpees when the beat drops! I get the best reactions- dropped jaws and laughter. In my opinion, this doesn’t give you the chance to get in your head like sometimes happens in your normal yoga class.

I found Buti Yoga when I attended Wild Spirit Yoga Camp hosted by my dear friend and buti instructor, Randi Greene. I immediately knew that I found my soulmate workout. I loved how fun the songs were. I was always singing along! I loved that I could shake my booty, and I struggled for a while to fight the urge not to “twerk” when learning the actual technique of opening and closing, NOT twerking! Class was so fun! There was so much energy and everyone cheers throughout the class! It was so empowering and encouraging. The best of all, through Buti Yoga, we really learn to love ourselves and our bodies. We learn that our bodies are beautiful and we should wear what we feel good in without a care what others think. We learn that we have a tribe of Butisattvas all over the world that support us in our most difficult times and also our most exciting endeavors! Sattva means enlightened one. Therefore a Butisattva is one that has successfully realized the power to heal is within.

Our core values are the following:

  1. BUILD the world you want to live in.
  2. You can only LEAD others as far as you’ve lead yourself.
  3. The greatest gift you can give, is the gift of unwavering FRIENDSHIP.
  4. One can only be as spiritual as they are GROUNDED.
  5. True leaders don’t create followers – they CREATE leaders.

If none of that makes you feel excited to come try a class, come to class for a great sweat, good music, or maybe to build a booty by buti (it’s a real thing, guys.. #bootybybuti). If you need some more convincing to come try a class, I would love to share more about Buti Yoga with you! Give it a chance and you just might get hooked!
